As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting the South-East in its quest for the presidency.

Speaking on Sunday at a rally organized by LP members from the South-East ahead of the Abuja Area Council election, Abure emphasized that the party has no regrets about zoning its 2023 presidential ticket to the region. He praised the industriousness and unity of the Igbo people, stating that they remain a formidable force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“Before the 2023 general election, I used to believe erroneously that South-East people were not united,” Abure said. “But when Peter Obi joined the party, and I had the privilege of campaigning for him across Nigeria, I discovered that the Igbos are the most united, industrious, hardworking, and fearless.”

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who hails from the South-East, finished third in the election, behind President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Despite the outcome, Abure insists the LP remains committed to helping the region realize its presidential ambition.

He called on the South-East to foster stronger political alliances across other regions to enhance their chances in 2027.

“The Igbos must go back to the drawing board,” Abure added. “They need more realignment with other sections of the country. I want to assure you that the Labour Party is still ready and available to support Ndigbo to realize the ambition of ruling the country in the future.”

With the 2027 election cycle beginning to take shape, political discussions around zoning and national unity continue to gain momentum. The Labour Party’s stance signals ongoing efforts to solidify its support base and strategize for the upcoming polls.
