Eighty women have indicated intention to participate in Widows Mass Wedding in Kafinhausa Local Government Area of Jigawa, an official has said.

Malam Abdulkadir Ibrahim, the Chairman, Widows Wedding Screening Committee, stated this in Kafinhausa on Tuesday while reviewing the committee’s report.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Jigawa Government initiated Widows’ Mass Wedding to assist poor couples to get married.

The programme also seeks to reduce the growing number of widows and reduce domestic violence resulting in broken marriages.

Ibrahim said that the committee had interviewed interested ladies who presented themselves for screening.

He said that the females who appeared before the committee included 54 widows and 27 spinsters.

Ibrahim explained that the committee was mandated to screen couples wishing to enter into a marriage contract, to enable them to participate in the mass wedding programme initiated by the state government.

He said that the committee had also solicited support from wealthy individuals and organisations to facilitate a successful implementation of the programme.(NAN)
