The Italian Foreign Ministry on Saturday said two Italians and a Canadian who were abducted while working in Libya less than two months ago have been freed.
According to the ministry, Danilo Calonego, Bruno Cacace and Frank Poccia were freed overnight in the south of Libya and have returned to Italy early on Saturday in a special flight.
The Italian ministry said the case was solved successfully following effective cooperation with local Libyan authorities.
Calonego’s sister, Daniela, said “It is finally a good day. I know that my brother is free and I am happy. I have not spoken to him yet.
“We are waiting for his return.”
The three men were kidnapped on Sept. 19 in the southern town of Ghat near a construction site they were working on.
They were stopped by an armed group that stopped their car.
No group claimed responsibility for the abductions, but similar actions had previously been carried by the Islamic State extremist group.
