2 Min Read

Access Bank’s role in freezing of #EndSARS promoters’ accounts has become the subject of scrutiny on Twitter.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on October 20 ordered the freezing of the accounts of 20 #EndSARS promoters domiciled with some commercial banks and later obtained a court order backing its decision.

The affected banks were Access Bank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, United Bank of Africa, and Zenith Bank.

Taking to Twitter, some Nigerians accused Access Bank of freezing the accounts even before getting the order, which is being challenged in court.

In contrast, they hailed another bank, Stanbic IBTC, for allegedly rebuffing CBN’s order to free the accounts.

Aisha Yesufu, an activist who was very vocal during the #EndSARS protests, wrote, ““They messed with the wrong generation. #BoycottAccessBank.”

One of the #EndSARS promoters, Victor Israel accused an unnamed bank of supplying information to the police that led to the arrest of a protester.

He wrote, “Let it be known that when CSP Hamzat came to arrest Eromz He mentioned the bank Eroms was using which is where they got Erom’s address & sister’s phone number

“This shows that Banks in Nigeria dont mind killing us to gain favor from CBN! Access bank is guilty. #BoycottAccessBank”

A columnist and public intellectual, Gimba Kakanda wrote, “Shame on you, @myaccessbank, for being a willing tool of oppressing #EndSARS campaigners who have accounts with you. You froze these customers’ accounts even before that midget tyrant at CBN, Godwin Emefiele, presented a court order. I support this call to #BoycottAccessBank.”

Farida Adamu wrote, “I will start the process of closing my account with Access Bank tomorrow, and I’m asking all of you who have accounts with them to please #BoycottAccessBank.

“Young people died because they were cut off from medical help due to the actions of this bank. We cannot allow this stand.”
