Adamawa Government said it has established and renovated 64 earth dams in 30 grazing reserves in the state ahead of the establishment of National Grazing Reserves programme.
Dr Isa Salihu, the State’s Commissioner for Livestock Production made the disclosure in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola.
Salihu said that the state government has equally established nomadic schools in some of the grazing reserves.
He said that the state government was committed to giving all necessary support and cooperation to the Federal Government towards the establishment of the grazing reserves and cattle ranches in the state.
He confirmed the existence of a law on gazetting grazing reserves since 1964, adding that the state government would develop the grazing reserves to international standard.
“We have 64 earth dams and nomadic schools established within the 30 gazette grazing reserves in the state.
“Presently, we are planning to see how we can partner with private sectors to start production of improved varieties of animal feeds and grasses,” Salihu said.
The commissioner explain further that the state government was making contacts with some interested local and foreign firms on how to boost the production of refined milk, beef and cheese among others.
NAN recalled that the state government had identified 72 grazing reserves and gazetted 30.
Salihu told NAN that government was viewing the possibility of establishing modem high tech ternary centres in three senatorial district of the state.
According to him, the state 2015 statistic showed that Adamawa was leading in cattle, sheep and other domestic animal production in the country with an estimated total of over three million animals.
The Commissioner called on the people of the state to give maximum support to the government in its effort to diversify from oil revenue dependent to agriculture and animal productions based economy.
