“We cannot afford to relax” – Wenger

Welshman Aaron Ramsey’s double helped secure a 3-0 win in Cardiff yesterday to send the Gunners seven points clear at the top.

Boss Wenger, whose team head to Hull on Wednesday, admits he is shocked by the size of that gap but insists there can be no let-up.

The Frenchman said: “If you’d told me at the start of the season we’d have this sort of lead by now, I’d never have believed you.

“But that’s why we have to keep up this level of urgency.

“We cannot afford to relax or take it easy.

“I am very pleased with this performance.

“We’ve kept a clean sheet and were very focused. It was a mature performance.”

Six years ago the Gunners were three points clear at the same stage of the campaign only to fade badly and finish third.

“We have to keep up this level of urgency. We cannot afford to relax or take it easy”

Wenger is refusing to be drawn on whether the current crop are a better bet to go all the way and end the club’s ten-year title famine.

The Emirates supremo added: “Let’s go a few more games before we start talking about that.

“If we can keep up this desire and consistency we have a good chance.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay, whose side have played three of the big six, is in no doubt that Arsenal have what it takes.

The Scot said: “Where are they after this result? Top. It’s not rocket science – of course they can win it.”

Wenger, who paid £4.8million for Ramsey in 2008, said: “If I was a midfielder, I would have loved to have what he has.

“He can defend, attack and score goals. And he’s young – another quality that I’ve lost.

“He can still develop. When you see the change in him in the last two years then why should he stop now?”
