“The curfew would encourage residents to stay at home,’’ said Health Minister Ferozuddin Feroz, who addef that gatherings should not be of more than two people.

Feroz said that participation in funeral ceremonies should also be limited.

The Herat Province, which has an estimated 1.7 million residents, shares a border with neighbouring Iran.

According to the Health Ministry, the coronavirus was brought into Afghanistan from Iran due to the high number of border crossings between the two countries on daily basis.

The Health Ministry said that there were 42 confirmed cases of Covid-19 nationwide, though only 400 people had been tested.

The number of unreported cases is likely to be higher.
