Aisha Yesufu Explains Why Government Thinks Nigerians Are Not Suffering
Political activist Aisha Yesufu has explained why the Nigerian government might believe that citizens are not suffering despite the worsening economic hardship in the country.
In a post on her verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, Yesufu said that those bearing the brunt of the hardship are ironically the ones defending the same administration responsible for it.
“Why won’t the government say Nigerians are lying when they say there is suffering in the land? The same people suffering are the ones at the forefront of defending the government,” she wrote.
Her comment comes amid rising discontent over the state of the economy following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023 — a policy move that has led to nationwide inflation and hardship.
Quoting human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, the co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement expressed disbelief that individuals struggling to afford rent or basic needs continue to defend a government that, in her words, “has wrecked the country’s economy and impoverished Nigerians.”
