Akpabio Denies Making Statement Against Donald Trump Over U.S. Military Threat to Nigeria
President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has denied making any derogatory remark against U.S. President Donald Trump following reports that falsely quoted him as reacting harshly to Trump’s threat of military action against Nigeria.
A viral post circulating online had claimed that Akpabio insulted Trump, allegedly saying the American leader should “focus on U.S. problems” instead of commenting on killings in Nigeria.
However, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senate President, described the post as “malicious and completely fabricated,” insisting that Akpabio never made such a statement either publicly or privately.
“Our attention has been drawn to a false post attributing an imaginary and reckless statement to the President of the Senate,” Eyiboh said. “The publication is a desperate attempt to cause misunderstanding between Senator Godswill Akpabio and President Donald Trump, as well as between Nigeria and its international partners.”
Eyiboh emphasized that the accompanying photo used in the report was misleading and intended to lend false credibility to the fabricated quote. He stressed that Akpabio is a “statesman of global repute” who respects diplomatic norms and holds President Trump in high regard.
“The Senate President would never issue a statement that falls within the domain of Nigeria’s Executive arm or foreign policy establishment,” he added, urging the public to disregard the misinformation entirely.
The statement reaffirmed Akpabio’s commitment to “transparency, truth, and responsible communication” while warning against the spread of falsehoods designed to inflame diplomatic tensions.
