Three Minneapolis police officers involved in the death of George Floyd will be facing charges, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar says.
Klobuchar tweeted Wednesday that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will also upgrade charges against Derek Chauvin, already arrested on third-degree murder, to second-degree murder in Floyd’s death.
However, she did not give details into the exact charges that will be filed against the remaining three former police officers: Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng. This comes after all four officers were fired last week after the arrest.
Klobuchar tweeted: “Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is increasing charges against Derek Chauvin to 2nd degree in George Floyd’s murder and also charging other 3 officers. This is another important step for justice.”
Floyd family attorney Ben Crump released statement after hearing the new charges, calling it a “bittersweet moment” for Floyd’s loved ones.

“We are deeply gratified that Attorney General Keith Ellison took decisive action in this case, arresting and charging all the officers involved in George Floyd’s death and upgrading the charge against Derek Chauvin to felony second-degree murder,” the statement released to media said. “These officers knew they could act with impunity, given the Minneapolis Police Department’s widespread and prolonged pattern and practice of violating people’s constitutional rights.”
