Alleged Senate Forgery : Elder Statesman Speaks Up

Elder statesman, Professor Ben Nwabueze has berated the federal government for the ongoing forgery trial in the Nigerian Senate.

Nwabueze disagreed with a statement credited to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal in which he said the forgery charges leveled against both Saraki and Ekweremadu has nothing to do with members of National Assembly.

Nwabueze disagreed, stating that the entire Nigerian Senate is in the dock, urging other senators to come out in solidarity with their leaders.

Speaking to The Guardian, Nwabueze said he was ‘provoked to come out from his retirement’ and speak on the matter after reading the SGF’s comments.

“It is a flagrant breach of separation of powers caused by ignorance as can be seen in the incompetent statement by the AGF,” he said.

He also condemned the SGF’s demand for Saraki and Ekwermadu to resign or face trial, criticizing the federal government for interfering in an internal matter affecting an independent arm of government.

According to him, the Senate’s Standing Rules is not particularly a public document and only senators should be interested in it.
