Aloy Ejimakor Reacts as Trump Designates Nigeria ‘Country of Particular Concern’ Over Human Rights Violations
Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has reacted to the decision by former United States President Donald Trump to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).
Ejimakor described the designation as inevitable, alleging that Nigeria’s government represses peaceful protesters while publicly engaging with terrorists.
He made the remark in a post on his X account, where he shared a video of himself receiving oxygen treatment, reportedly as a result of injuries sustained during a protest.
“The aftermath of taking two direct teargas hits for expressing my legal right to peaceable assembly,” Ejimakor wrote. “When a nation tear-gasses peaceful protesters but romances terrorists in full glare of the public, being slammed as a Country of Particular Concern becomes inevitable. #FreeMNK.”
Last month, Ejimakor and several others were arrested in Abuja during a protest calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The demonstration, organized by activist Omoyele Sowore, was intended to take place near the Presidential Villa to demand that President Bola Tinubu order Kanu’s release.
Following their arrest, Ejimakor, Kanu’s brother Prince Emmanuel, Sowore, and others were arraigned before a Kuje Magistrate Court. They were initially detained before being granted bail.
Reports indicated that security operatives fired teargas at the protesters during their transfer, leading to Ejimakor’s collapse. He was later treated by medical personnel while in custody.
Ejimakor’s reaction comes amid renewed international scrutiny of Nigeria’s human rights record and its handling of political dissent, with Trump’s designation expected to intensify pressure on the government.
