Amaechi Reveals Why He Appointed Wike as Chief of Staff During Tenure as Rivers Governor

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that he appointed Nyesom Wike as his Chief of Staff in order to supervise him closely, rejecting Wike’s request to head the state’s finance ministry.
Amaechi made the disclosure during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, where he addressed lingering political tensions between the two former allies turned rivals.
According to Amaechi, Wike had lobbied to be appointed Commissioner for Finance, a request he declined.
“I wanted him (Wike) as Chief of Staff so I could supervise him,” Amaechi stated. “Adoke flew all the way from Abuja to Port Harcourt because Wike had asked me to make him Commissioner for Finance. I said no—he has to work under me so that I can supervise him.”

The former governor also took a swipe at Wike, accusing him of self-aggrandizement in his political journey.
“He made himself Chief of Staff. He made himself governor. He made himself a minister. He made himself local government chairman,” Amaechi said.
The comments come amid ongoing political drama in Rivers State, where tensions remain high between factions loyal to Amaechi and those aligned with Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
