American, who assaulted airport worker in Lagos, gets N200,000 bail in court (Photo)

An American, who  allegedly parked at a restricted area and assaulted a towing van operator at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, was on Friday granted N200,000 bail by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, Breedlove Shawn, 52, was arraigned alongside an Uber driver, Adeyemo Akintunde.

The Magistrate, Mrs T.A. Ojo, said that the first first defendant, Shawn, should provide two sureties as part of his bail conditions.

Ojo directed that one of the sureties must have a means of livelihood in Nigeria, be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

Adelakun also granted the second defendant bail  in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

She said that the surety must be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shawn is standing trial on a three-count-charge bordering on assault and assault occassoining harm while Akintunde is facing a count charge of breach of the peace.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Oluwabunmi Adeitan, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 24 at 1.30p.m., at MMIA.

According to the prosecutor, Shawn had an altercation with Mr Femi Banjoko, an employee of Billafary Towing Services Ltd.

Adeitan alleged that Shawn caused Banjoko grievous injury.

The alleged offences contravened Sections 166, 173 and 406 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case was adjourned until Aug.  26 for mention.

NAN reports that the Divisional Police Officer, MMIA, Mr Danjuma Garba, had said that the U.S. citizen on Wednesday morning at the MMIA used a car key to injure the ear of 32-year-old Banjoko.

Garba said that the assault occurred after Shawn was accosted by workers of the company contracted by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

According to the DPO, Shawn  parked at a  restricted area of the airport, and the workers attempted to tow his vehicle. (NAN)
