Anambra new Speaker promises quality legislation

Mr Ikem Uzoezi, the new Speaker, Anambra House of Assembly, has promised that the assembly under his watch will work assiduously to give the state quality legislation and more effective representation.

He made the promise on Thursday in Awka during his maiden news briefing shortly after holding his first plenary session, which was attended by 25 out of the 30 members of the house.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Uzoezi emerged the new speaker on Wednesday, following the removal of Mrs Rita Maduagwu, for alleged financial impropriety and high-handedness.

The new speaker gave assurance that the legislature would ensure that the constituents got effective representation from members.

He further said that the house would take necessary measures to ensure the maintenance of peace and order in the state.

Uzoezi said that the primary duty of the legislature was to make laws that would help the executive to provide good governance to the people.

He pledged that the new leadership would strive to ensure robust legislature-executive relationship, saying that the two arms should work harmoniously in the interest of the people.

He said that the plenary session was held with due regard to all the existing house rules.

NAN reports that the session, which went uninterrupted, was attended by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Halford Oseke (APGA), Majority Leader, Victor Okoye, (APGA), Minority Leader, Mr Onyebuchi Offor (PDP), among others.

A cross-section of the 20 law makers that attended the news briefing promised greater commitment to their legislstive assignment in order to justify the people’s mandate.

Meanwhile, the speaker has apologised to the Nigeria Union of Journalists over the reported lock out of some reporters by the security at the assembly.

He said that the house would not condone future occurrence and solicited the cooperation of journalists in the state in the overall interest of the state.

He adjourned sitting to Nov. 20.
