At least two people have been confirmed dead in Lagos after a seven-story building collapsed in Lekki, Lagos State.
On Sunday morning, the still-under-construction building located at Oba Idowu Oniru Street, near Sandfield Bus Stop in Lekki, near Ave Maria Hospital caved in.
Although the immediate cause of the collapse is unknown, emergency personnel and security personnel arrived on the scene to potentially rescue the trapped victims.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), both confirmed the incident.

During their statement earlier in the day they had also confirmed that six people were trapped and assured that search and rescue operations had begun on the scene.
According to LASEMA, it responded to a distress call at the location at midnight and activated its response plan, where six people were reported to be trapped at the time.
According to the emergency management agency, a heavy-duty equipment excavator was required to rescue the trapped victims.
“Upon arrival at the scene, an unfinished 7-story building under construction was discovered to have collapsed.” “It is reported that six people are trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed structure,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
“A heavy-duty excavator from the Agency will be required for the rescue of the trapped victims.” The Lagos State Response Plan has been activated. “Operation is still ongoing.”
The Lagos state government had previously marked the collapsed building with a sealed sign.
Since February 2021, the Lagos State Building Control Agency has designated the site as a restricted zone.
Meanwhile, efforts to rescue more victims from the site of the building collapse continue.
This is not the first time a building in the nation’s commercial capital has collapsed.
