Aregbesola Rules Out Alliance Ahead of 2026 Osun Governorship Election

Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has ruled out the possibility of his political group, The Omoluabi Progressives, forming any alliance with other political actors or factions ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.
Aregbesola made the declaration during a reception held in Osogbo on Sunday to mark his 68th birthday. The event was organised by members of The Omoluabi Progressives, a political platform he founded after completing his tenure as governor.
Addressing supporters, the former Minister of Interior expressed confidence in the group’s chances in the forthcoming election, stating that it is fully prepared to contest independently.

“Some people have the wrong impression that we will align with others in the next governorship election. We are not going to align with anyone,” Aregbesola said. “We are going to pursue our political interests separately. No alliance with anyone or group. By the grace of God, this group will win. We will contest and we will win.”
He further expressed optimism about the group’s political future, saying, “By this time next year, we will all be close to Abere [Osun Governor’s Office]. May God make it so.”
Beyond politics, Aregbesola used the occasion to reflect on the importance of birthdays as a time for gratitude, particularly toward mothers. “Whenever you are celebrating a birthday, always remember to pray for your mother. The pains they endure during childbirth are enormous,” he said.
He also thanked the organisers of the event for the recognition, adding, “I am happy for this honour. I pray for you all—may you continue to succeed in all your endeavours.”
Former Secretary to the State Government under Aregbesola’s administration, Moshood Adeoti, urged members of the Omoluabi Progressives to remain committed to the group’s ideals.
Representing the current Osun State Governor, Biyi Odunlade commended Aregbesola’s legacy, noting his lasting impact on governance in the state. “I celebrate you because you left a good template for good governance in Osun State that cannot be faulted by anybody,” Odunlade said. “Your legacy of service is exemplary and remarkable.”
