While the Federal Republic of Nigeria celebrates its 58th year of Independence from the British Empire, security continues to be a recurring factor in the daily lives of the people especially in Jos in recent times.

Reports circulating on social media including pictures and live videos have revealed that armed gunmen invaded students’ hostels in the University of Jos, and shot dead a number of students in their hostels. This incident comes on the heels of the attack on a community that wiped out a family of 9 in Jos.

In a particular video posted online by @Subdeliveryzone, students could be seen running from soldiers and Fulani herdsmen as gunshots were heard in the background to scenes of students fleeing through the bushes for their lives.

A student of the University of Jos @ericdaspan also tweeted;

“So there are herdsmen in our hostel right now. There’s high tension all around. There’s no security coming to help us. We need help.”

He then followed up the earlier tweet a few hours later saying a 300 level student of the University had just been shot by a soldier in front of his hostel even as other gunmen were still unleashing mayhem in front of the hotel;

“…No way to rush him to the hospital because the gunmen are still in front of the hostel,” he concluded.

There were more videos online showing a faint line of armed men shooting at fleeing students; the video was filmed from quite some distance as the people behind the camera had to flee as the sound of gunshots became louder and more sporadic.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attack on the students was carried out by a combined force of Nigerian soldiers and Fulani herdsmen.

Trouble allegedly started on the 28th of September 2018 when 12 people were murdered in the city; the people had then protested on the streets with the corpses alleging that soldiers had joined forces with Fulani herdsmen to slaughter people at will.

The corpses shown in the videos were allegedly shot before being inflicted with deep machete wounds on the heads and face.

Other tweets further highlighted the extent of severity of the situation as gory pictures further circulated online.

@chizommy tweeted; “The city of Jos is on fire and no one is talking about it. Armed gunmen stormed the hostels in the University of Jos and opened fire. Students lost their lives and many injured. But no one is reporting it. Ok o #WeJosWantPeace.”
