As the panel set up by the Federal Government to look into Defence Equipment Procurement in the Nigerian Armed Forces is set to turn in its report on findings, tension level has reportedly risen among top officers and former army chiefs.
According to reports, a source close to the committee confirmed that several top military officers were named on the indictment list and some are already trying to suppress the report from seeing the light of the day.
The source, according to Premium Times noted that the report is damning and explosive adding that retired top army officers indicted include present minister of interior, Abdurrahman Bello Dambazau, the immediate past chief of army staff, Kenneth Minimah, and his predecessor, Azubuike Ihejirika.
The source further named Dambazau as one of the kingpins seeking to suppress the content of the report.
“The committee members are putting things together and will present its findings to the president in the next week or so.”
Recall that the president, Muhammadu Buhari had in August 2015 directed the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Mongonu, to set up an investigative committee comprising of 13 members in order to look into the procurement of hardware and munitions in the Armed Forces from 2007.
The source further explained that the report detailed investigations into outright stealing of money meant for purchasing army equipment. The source further added that the investigative committee uncovered several other corrupt practices ncluding inflation of contracts, diversion of soldiers’ welfare funds and other corrut dealings.
