Atiku-Obi Alliance Could Form Strongest Opposition Ticket in 2027 – Aide
A media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has suggested that a joint presidential ticket between Atiku and 2023 Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, could create the strongest opposition front against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Demola Olarewaju, Atiku’s Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy, made the remark during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast. He argued that an Atiku-Obi partnership could give Nigerians a “co-presidency” model, combining the political strength and ideas of both men.
“I think the best bet would be to have the two of them on that ticket and give Nigerians this sort of sense of co-presidency,” Olarewaju said.
He described Atiku as a resilient politician who consistently backs other candidates after primary defeats. “He lost the primaries to Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and worked for him, delivering Adamawa State in that election. That’s who Atiku Abubakar is,” he added.
Olarewaju also highlighted the role of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s future. He noted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) plans to reserve 35–50 percent of positions for youths and women, and stressed that Atiku himself has shown readiness to step aside for a younger candidate if defeated in a primary.
Despite that, he maintained that Atiku remains the opposition’s strongest contender.
“The strongest ticket that the opposition can present is the marriage of Atiku and Obi,” Olarewaju said, pointing out their shared ideologies as a foundation for such an alliance.
