Atiku reacts as Joshua Dogonyaro, ex-Chief of Defence Staff, dies

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed sadness at the death of former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Joshua Dogonyaro (rtd).

He mourned the retired general in a series of tweets on Thursday.

Dogonyaro, a former commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), died aged 80 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State.

His son, Joshua, confirmed that he suffered a stroke and was rushed to the hospital.

“Unfortunately, early this morning (Thursday), around 3.00am precisely, he breathed his last.

“His death comes as a rude shock to us as a family. We are going to miss his love and warm as a grandfather, father, brother, uncle and supporter.

“He was a general who had no bias mind as a detribalised Nigerian. He served this nation faithful and identified with all Nigerians and Africa as a continent.

“We and Nigerians are going to miss him having served humanity in this country and Africa as a whole,” Joshua said.

Reacting, Atiku commiserated with the family of the deceased and the government and people of Plateau State as a whole.

He wrote, “I am saddened by the loss of Lt Gen. Joshua Dogonyaro (rtd), soldier and administrator. He was a thoroughbred soldier and administrator, who held several command position; the peak of which was as Chief of Defence Staff.

“My deepest condolences to his family and the government, and the people of Plateau State. May his soul rest in peace.”
