Controversy has erupted in the entertainment world as a luxury detective Instagram page has accused the famous comedian AY Makun of showcasing a counterfeit Hermès bag.
Earlier in February, AY Makun proudly posted a photo on his Instagram, flaunting a Hermès designer bag. However, on Sunday, T20Luxury—a well-known luxury page that reviews and shares prices of designer products—called out the comedian for allegedly promoting a fake Hermès bag.
T20Luxury went further to advise AY Makun to avoid patronizing brands that produce counterfeit products. They shared a side-by-side photo of AY with the supposed fake Hermès bag and an image of the original, writing, “Dear AY, as a key stakeholder in the entertainment industry and a beneficiary of genuine creativity, it’s more honorable to refrain from supporting the counterfeit fashion industry. Upholding authenticity is important to preserving our reputation as leaders within the Black community.”
The accusations have sparked varied reactions from netizens. Some have criticized Nigerian celebrities for living “fake lives,” while others suggested that AY might have unknowingly purchased a counterfeit item from his personal shopper. Here are a few comments:
- mr_jakan05: “Nigerian celebrities and their fake life is not helping we Nigerians both home and abroad.”
- matete4real: “It’s possible he was supplied a fake by his personal shopper.”
- mr.charleswealth: “Na the same thing, but AY’s own was rushedly made. Nobody’s gonna know.”
- cindy_official1111: “I’m a lover of originals too, but it’s his choice.”
- segun122: “This is what I told my friend back then in university days—that instead of buying fake brand-new designer wear, why not go for Akube (used original) or buy brand-new ZARA and wear it with pride?”
- b.o.b.b.y_official: “AY X, A-why?”
- gabzy.001: “I don’t subscribe to calling him out online, but for those people supporting him because he’s a known public figure, I hope he won’t cry the blues when someone decides to sell pirated copies of his movie.”
