Barcelona legend Xavi has announced that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The 40-year-old, who is currently the manager of Qatari side Al Sadd, disclosed this in a statement through the club’s social media channels on Saturday.

Xavi added that he remained asymptomatic and will be self-isolating.

He said that B-Team coach, David Prats would take charge of the first team for Saturday’s clash with Al Khor in the resumed Stars League.

“Today I won’t be able to join my team on their comeback to the official competition,” he wrote.

“David Prats will be there on my behalf as head of the technical staff.

“A few days ago, following the league protocol, I tested positive in the last COVID-19 test.

“Fortunately, I’m feeling ok, but I will be isolated until I am given the all-clear.

“When the health services allow it, I will be very eager to return to my daily routine and to work.

“I’d like to thank all the authorities, especially those working in the league, the federation and Al Sadd for supplying the means of early detection, reducing the spread of infection and guaranteeing the normal development of the competition.

“Take care and see you soon on the football pitch.”

Suspended since March due to COVID-19, the Qatari Star League (QSI) resumed on Friday.

Xavi’s Al Sadd are third on the league table with five games to go.
