Benue PDP Loses Only Reps Member, Ojotu Ojema, to APC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has lost its only member in the House of Representatives, Pastor Ojotu Ojema, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ojema, who represents the Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and chairs the House Committee on National Inland Waterways, announced his defection on Thursday, October 9, 2025, during a meeting with PDP executives from his constituency in Obagaji, Agatu Local Government Area.
Explaining his decision, Ojema said he arrived at the move after wide consultations with his family, political associates, and constituents, blaming deep-seated internal crises within the PDP for his exit.
“The PDP has been engulfed in internal wrangling that has made it difficult for the party to function cohesively. I cannot remain in a system that stifles progress and unity,” he said.
He added that his switch to the APC was guided by divine direction and a commitment to deliver more development to his constituency.
“God’s instruction to me is to make people happy. My achievements in two years are visible across Apa and Agatu, and I will do more if I am in the ruling party,” Ojema stated.
The lawmaker thanked PDP members for their support over the years and assured that his decision would not strain his relationships across party lines.
Several PDP leaders at the meeting, including former Agatu Legislative Leader Hon. Ochokwu Alelu, Agatu LGA PDP Chairman Hon. Sunday Oteyi, Acting Apa LGA PDP Chairman Hon. Oki Saleh, and Mrs. Alima Matthew, commended Ojema’s leadership and described him as a unifying force focused on development. They urged supporters to continue standing by him regardless of party affiliation.
Ojema’s aide, Hon. Prince Antenyi, also praised his principal’s performance, noting that he had provided livelihood opportunities for thousands of constituents.
“Inasmuch as the people of Apa love him and wish he remained in the PDP, they will not go against God’s decision,” Antenyi said. “His move to the APC will attract greater opportunities to our constituency.”
He further called on Agatu residents to support Ojema’s defection, describing it as “a great omen for everyone.”
