Some hundred supporters of a pro-democracy faction took to the streets to "condemn" the victory day of the former pro-communist regime of 1970s followed by the victory of former anti-Soviet Mujahedin that also marked the start of Afghanistan's civil war between 1992 and 1996. As the onslaught of the terrorist group Boko Haram continues unabated, a human rights activist has identified three reasons the Federal Government should consider banning veils.

Sapele, Delta State-based Mr. James Idoghor, in an interview with Vanguard, urged the government to ban veils because many criminals perpetrate crimes with them.

He said the veil completely hides an assailant’s gender and motive, and makes it impossible for them to be traced after the commission of a crime.

Also, he added that many countries were already restricting the use of face-covering veils because it poses grave danger to their citizenry.

Idoghor said: “Most of the perpetrators of the heinous crimes usually wear veils to disguise their gender and motives.

No democratic country will tolerate any religious norm that has turned dangerous to the precious lives of her citizenry. This government should not pay deaf ears to the cries of her citizens. People are dying in their dozens by the day. The wearing of veils must be stopped.”
