As the war against Boko Haram rages on, reports indicate that the wife of the sect’s leader Abubakar Shekau, Malama Fitdasi Shekau, was killed in an airstike carried out by the Nigerian Army.

This is according to a statement released by Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya on Wednesday in Abuja.

The successful airstrikes were carried out on Durwawa settlement on the outskirts of Urga, near Konduga.

Adesanya said that efforts are ongoing to confirm that Malama is indeed among the dead.

Malama was allegedly representing her husband in a coordinating meeting with other insurgents at the location of the airstrikes.

“Battle Damage Assessment had indeed revealed that the aerial attack set off a fire, causing damage to the insurgents’ structures within the settlement.
“The airstrike also succeeded in neutralising most of the insurgents with a few of them fleeing the location,” he said.

He continued “The exercise is designed to rain significant fire on freshly discovered hideouts of the terrorists. On the first day, we conducted several air interdiction missions in the North-East, including the Garin Maloma area. Consequently, the location was attacked, in succession, by two Alpha Jets aircraft.

“The first Alpha Jet aircraft attacked the settlement with bombs, which destroyed the terrorists’ buildings, while the second Alpha Jet aircraft, which strafed the area with rockets, subsequently took out some of the fleeing terrorists.”
