The battle for control of Kano just got hotter today after former Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Daily Trust quoted Shekarau’s media aide, Sule Ya’u Sule, as confirming the development on Tuesday morning.

Sule was quoted as saying that his principal finally decided to move to the ruling party after extensive and heated discussions with his followers.

He added that Shekarau was pushed into the move by the “injustice” meted out to him by the PDP leadership.

Sule said that his principal felt let down and belittled by the PDP leadership’s fawning over the defection of another former Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, to the party.

Shekarau was said to have condemned the PDP leadership’s purported style of dancing to Kwankwaso’s tune to the detriment of other party bigwigs.

“I want to confirm to you that Shekarau has decided to defect from PDP to APC due to the injustice meted on him and his supporters by the PDP leadership.

“My boss has met with Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in Abuja yesterday and concluded plans for our return to APC.

“He will meet with all the stakeholders concerned in Kano and than make his decamping public,” he said.

Kwankwaso, who currently represents Kano Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, was governor in 2015 when Buhari won 1.9 million votes in Kano.

He announced his decision to contest for the presidency in 2019 under the platform of the PDP last week after defecting from the APC in July.

He has also vowed to stop Buhari from winning in Kano.

However, current Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is seeking a second term in 2019, promised to get five million votes for Buhari in the state without Kwankwaso.

Shekarau is expected to help Ganduje achieve the feat and end Kwankwaso’s dominance in the state.
