Breaking: Supreme Court confirms Wike’s election as Rivers governor

The Supreme Court has confirmed the outcome of the  March 9 governorship election that ‎brought Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to power.

The apex court on Friday, October 25, confirmed two appeals filed by Governor Nyesom Wike against the judgment of the Court of Appeal.

The court in its ruling up tuning the dismissal of a petition filed by the African Action Congress (AAC) and its candidate in the last governorship election, Awara Biokpomabo Festus.

In two unanimous judgments on Friday seven-man panel of the court upheld the two appeals by Wike on the grounds that they were meritorious. The appeals were marked: SC/1111/2019 and SC/1112/2019. Justice Ejembi Eko delivered the lead judgments in both appeals, which the other six members of the panel agreed with.

Meanwhile, The Herald reported that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) at the 6 division of the Nigerian Army, Jamil Sarham, revealed that  Wike offered him billions of naira to compromise the March governorship elections in the state.

Sarham spoke through a statement by Aminu Iliyasu, the division’s spokesman, adding that Wike declared war on him when he refused to accept the governor’s offer.

Recall that Wike had accused Sarham of running an oil theft ring in the state. He also accused the army chief of sending troops to assassinate him in his residence on February 15.

But in his reaction, Sarham said “Wike’s resentment against me is based on my choice of professionalism and integrity over the billions of naira offered me by the Rivers state governor to compromise the 2019 general election,” the statement read.
