The United States President, Donald Trump is unarguably one of the least liked American Presidents of all times. Time and time again he has chosen to be blunt rather than be politically correct and he has carried out his campaign promises with precise doggedness not giving a damn whose ox is gored.
Great Britain rolled out the red carpet for the President of their long time ally, Donald Trump on Thursday night despite planned protest which included plans to float a giant baby caricature of the US president.
British Prime Minister Theresa May invoked wartime leader Winston Churchill and strong transatlantic ties between the two countries as as she hosted Donald Trump Thursday night; hours after he began a protest-laden visit by questioning her Brexit strategy.
The British Prime Minister recalled the long and proud history of alliances between both countries and said they had the most special of relationships while welcoming the American president and First Lady Melania Trump to a black-tie dinner with business leaders at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Churchill.
“Mr President, Sir Winston Churchill once said that ‘to have the United States at our side was, to me, the greatest joy. Now, for the benefit of all our people, let us work together to build a more prosperous future,” May said calling for a free trade agreement with the US after Britain leaves the European Union in 2019.
Trump, known for ignoring convention went straight for business as he touched down in London; his first visit since his election into office by rebuking his beleaguered host as she struggles over Brexit.
Trump had expressed doubts as to whether May would deliver on British voters’ intentions when they backed leaving the EU in a 2016 referendum during a press conference in Brussels after the NATO summit.
“The people voted to break it up (Britain’s ties with the EU). So I would imagine that’s what they will do, but maybe they will take a little bit of a different route. I don’t know (if) that is what they voted for,” he said
President Trump hopes to avoid mass protests planned for his controversial trip to the UK, which includes talks with May, tea with Queen Elizabeth II as well as a private weekend in Scotland.
