Buhari appoints new Chief of Staff

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, as his new Chief of Staff.

The 75-year-old retired diplomat is an indigene of Kwara State.

Gambari replaces Mallam Abba Kyari, who died of COVID-19 complications in April.

He was Foreign Affairs Minister when Buhari was Head of State in the mid-80s.

Information reaching The Herald has it that the President met his new appointee at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday morning.

It was further learnt that he will resume his duties on Wednesday.

Gambari was appointed by former Secretary-General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon and the chairperson of the African Union Commission as Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur effective from 1 January 2010. He was also Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Previously, he served as the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (USG) for the Department of Political Affairs (DPA).

Former Kwara State Governor, AbdulFatah Ahmad named him pioneer chancellor of the Kwara State University in March 2013.

An Ilorin prince, Gambari was born on  November 24, 1944.
