Mr Omokanye Oladele, the Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Kwara State Chapter, has called on the Federal Government to speedily enact laws that would aid professional builders to protect Nigerians from constant building collapse.

Oladele made the appeal while speaking with newsmen in commemoration of this year’s Builder’s Day Celebration in Ilorin on Friday.

He said such law would allow builders to operate independently and become the sole executor of building projects in the country.

According to him, the legislation will also be a guide for professionals in building industry and also save the public from quack builders and constant building collapse.

“The National Assembly must act fast and enact a legislation that will aid the stoppage of building collapse, because we are tired of receiving bad news of building collapse every day.

“Quack builders have taken over, so we want a law that will guard Nigerians from them,” he said.

He also warned the public to desist from patronising sub-standard materials for their building.

According to him, most building collapse is as a result of sub-standard materials and preference to buy cheaper products.

“We need to erase the mentality of managing when it comes to building. We don’t manage; let us get the best material and enjoy our shelter.

He also urged professional builders in the country to unite and work as a team to provide the best building for their clients.

Oladele also advised builders in the state to enroll for their professional courses to be fully recognised.

The chairman said the institute in Kwara is adopting Building Information Modelling, which would allow data capturing of areas before commencement of building.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Builders had earlier embarked on a peaceful rally to the Government House, House of Assembly and Federal Secretariat to sensitise the public on need to say ‘No to Building Vollapse’.

The members carried different placards with inscriptions like: “Say No to Building Collapse”, “Engage Professionals”, “Building Collapse is Avoidable”; and “Engage professional Builders”.
