CAMA: Mixed Reactions trail Bishop Oyedepo’s outcry for bill reversal

3 Min Read

Nigerians have reacted to the outcry of Bishop David Oyedepo as he calls for reversal of the newly revised Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 bill signed by President Buhari on August 7.

The revised CAMA bill allows Federal Government to appoint and remove board of trustees for churches and other religious centres.

The Bishop stated it was wrong of government to meddle in the affairs of the church of Christ.

Reacting to the news, Presidency told Oyedepo to obey the new policy or manufacture his own country.

However, Nigerians have taken to the streets of social media to express their thoughts about the new CAMA bill.

@monkhan_

So the government can just close the account of the church or remove the trustees and that doesnt require any Court validation!!!!!!!…. without the court validation!!.. can’t ya’ll smell the foul play here?πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

@ayemojubar

Oyedepo: Imagine all religious centres in Nigeria organise a nationwide anti-CAMA protest against Buhari govt?

☺️ Buhari is toying with gate of hell.

@am_nigerian

Oyedepo must obey the laws of the land. Even the Bible says it.

@princechinedu04

Every christian should stand up against CAMA, it’s not about Oyedepo,

Imagine this government with their cluelessness appointing a trustee or a manager over the church of Christ.

They want to dictate how the church should be run

@ifedurotimi

If the day ever comes that someone leaves Bishop Oyedepo and President Buhari in the same room alone, Bishop Oyedepo fit deck am.

@akinolaij

This Bishop Oyedepo may have to relocate his church to another country. Even Jesus Christ taught us to submit to authority. Churches should be subject to corporate governance tenets in honour of God and demonstration of accountability and stewardship to their members.

@emmykrim

I love Bishop Oyedepo’s audacity. What business does the Federal Government have with appointing trustees in the church. Bunch of clueless beings.

@josh_fatoye

Buhari has signed CAMA into law. Meaning: government can take over NGOs like churches and mosques if they want. Government can appoint managers for the NGOs, businesses or churches they take over.

Oyedepo says government is going too far.

@6f85471ba24b5

What is the interest of of govt in NGOs and churches. This gvt. Lacks priorities. See unemployment rates, insecurity etc. Gvt. won’t make good laws to intervene and make the lives of Nigerians better.

Oyedepo is right govt is going too far.

@Nwojustan

But he allows the UK and US Gov’t to take over his churches there

@OkpiD replied @Nwojustan

Those are countries that are working, and if they monitor anything they will keep you and themselves accountable. In Naija, it’s just another way to further corruption and enrich their pockets.
