The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday called on motorists to always take precautionary measures at parking lots to avoid car theft.
Mr Livinus Okonkwo, the Assistant Corps Commander of Dutse-Alhaji Unit Command of FRSC in
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) made the call while delivering a vehicle that was successfully recovered to the owner in Abuja.
Okonkwo, who delivered the recovered 1998-model Sienna space bus stolen from Adeyemo Abayomi in Lugbe, FCT, said that the call had become necessary to enable unsuspecting public to avoid car theft.
He said that the vehicle, which was recovered on Kubwa expressway in Abuja, was first considered to have been involved in auto crash, but later discovered to have been stolen.
According to him, the recovered vehicle belongs to Abayomi, based on the document provided to FRSC
from police, who confirmed the report to the corps.
The assistant corps commander added that “this incidence will serve as eye opener to other motorists to learn how to park and secure their vehicles.
“It is not enough to just park a car without taking adequate precautions; the environment you park your car matters a lot too.
“You must always ensure that where you park your car is safe, safeguard your battery, use fabricated pedal locks, which is what has helped us today.
“So, we are using this medium to advise the public to embrace safety precautions, which is very important, because it will help to preserve properties.”
He explained that the car was thought by corps officials to have broken down on Aug. 6 while on routine patrol and later discovered to be stolen after investigation.
Okonkwo said that the FRSC was able to trace the car owner through identity cards found in the vehicle.
He urged motorists to put their vehicle brakes, tyres, wipes and engine in order before driving and adhere to road safety rules and regulations, to avoid road accident.
The recovered vehicle owner thanked the officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Unit Command of the FRSC for their intervention.
He said “I parked the car at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, and used a pedal lock to secure the brake throttle.
“The next morning when I wanted to take my wife out to a shop nearby at 8 a.m., I discovered that my car was not there, so I reported at Kuchingoro Police Station, Lugbe, FCT and I was referred to Wuye community and later Kaduna road.
“I later got a telephone call from FRSC that the car had been recovered and I was asked
to bring proof of ownership which I did.
“I am grateful to FRSC and the police for the effort.”
Okonkwo handed over the car key to Abayomi. (NAN)
