Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has called on the Federal Government to check the killing of innocent citizens by suspected herdsmen across the country.

Fayose made the call in Ibadan on Tuesday at a forum organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, to mark the World Press Freedom Day.

Fayose in his speech entitled, “ Journalism and Politics: Two sides of a Coin’’ condemned the killings.

The governor , who commended President Muhammadu Buhari for tackling the Boko Haram sect, said the same strategy should be deployed in checking the killings.

“We should do everything possible as a nation to address this issue and the Federal Government should take decisive steps about it,’’ he said.

He also said journalists like the courts remain the hope of the poor man, noting that the media shape public opinion.

“I appeal to journalists to improve on their past and look forward to a Nigeria of our dreams,’’ the governor said.

Fayose also urged journalists to promote good governance by holding public officers accountable.

The NUJ Chairman in the state, Mr Gbenga Opadotun, said the forum was organised to mark the World Press Freedom Day and to reflect on the travails of journalists world wide. (NAN)
