Coding Curriculum Coming to Lagos Schools

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) on Wednesday said it is partnering with the Lagos State Ministry of Education to make the coding curriculum accessible to students.

Mr Adeyemi Odutola, the W.TEC’s Communications Officer, said that the Centre would serve as a delivery partner for the effective running of the project.

“W.TEC brings to the CodeLagos project her wealth of experience from the success of her after-school computer club for girls WTEC Academy as she partners with the Lagos State Ministry of Education.

“The CodeLagos project is an initiative of the Lagos Ministry of Education to provide every student and youth at large in Lagos State with the opportunities to learn to code free of charge,” Odutola said in a statement.

He said the objective of the programme was for the citizens to leverage on the latest technological advancements for their collective development.

Odutola said that the state ministry was aimed at making the coding curriculum accessible to every student in Lagos State.

He said that the CodeLagos training would hold in public and private schools across the state, as well as Information and Communication Technology centres and Public Libraries.

“In respect to this, training sessions at designated schools is strictly for students of the schools, while training sessions at various public libraries is open to members of the public who are registered with any particular library.

“Due to this, a total of 145 ICT instructors from 116 public and private schools in Lagos State will be equipped with the necessary competence and skills to effectively teach the coding classes in their respective schools

“W.TEC’s partnership with CodeLagos is to overlook assigned secondary schools, ICT centres and public libraries in the Lagos Mainland zone for the project.

“The monitoring responsibility of W.TEC is to make sure that set standards of the project are met by the schools and also sustaining adequate publicity for the assigned centres,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that CodeLagos is an initiative of the Lagos State Ministry of Education aimed at educating Lagos State residents for the future of work by teaching them how to write code and creatively solve problems.

NAN also reports that W.TEC is a Nigerian non-governmental organisation working to empower girls and women socially and economically, using information and communication technology.

It organises projects and workshops, which help to build technology skills and literacy among women.
