Confusion as dead baby goes missing in Ondo mortuary

The police in Ondo state has begun an investigation to unravel how a dead newborn disappeared from a morgue at the state’s Specialist Hospital, Akure.

Herald Nigeria learnt that the baby and his mother were brought dead to the hospital from the police hospital, Akure and their remains deposited at the mortuary of the government-owned hospital on Wednesday.

The woman was said to have died during labour at the police hospital.

However, the woman’s family, on arrival to take the corpses for burial on Saturday, were shocked to find our the corpse of the baby was missing.

A source close to the investigation explained that,  “When the family of the deceased got to the hospital mortuary on Saturday to collect the remains of the dead, they only saw the body of the mother and the placenta but they could not find the baby. The mortuary attendants could not explain how it happened.’’

The source added that family members of the deceased almost caused confusion on the hospital premises following the incident.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Mr Femi Joseph, said “We have not made any arrest for now but we have commenced investigation into the matter. We will invite the workers of the hospital, especially those working at the mortuary section,” Joseph stated.
