Convocation: We don’t want you near Unilag – ASUU warns Babalakin

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr Wale Babalakin, has been warned to steer clear of the institution.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) issued the stern warning on Wednesday in reaction to the ongoing tussle between the council and the university management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe.

Recall that the tussle had led to the suspension of the university’s 51st Convocation Ceremony scheduled for Monday, March 9 to March 12.

The council had claimed that Ogundipe did not carry it along in the programme.

But rising from its congress, the UNILAG branch of the union said it no longer needed Babalakin around the school, hence the call for him to stay away.

Chairman of ASUU, UNILAG Branch, Dr Dele Ashiru said, “ Dr Wale Babalakin is now a persona non grata on our campus. We don’t want to see him again anywhere in the university. He is no longer needed.”

According to Ashiru, other resolutions arrived at during the congress would be communicated via a statement.

Speaking days ago, Ashiru had described the suspension of the convocation programme as “satanic”.

“Our union condemns this wicked, inhuman, egoistic, retrogressive, unconscionable and satanic postponement of this historic convocation ceremony on account of the over bloated ego of the pro-chancellor.

“That the Ministry of Education could by fiat request the executive secretary of the NUC to advise the vice chancellor to suspend the ceremony without investigating the veracity of Babalakin ’ s claim is not only worrisome but highly depressing,” he said.
