A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday, sentenced a 25-year-old man, Friday Oleka, to eight months in prison for stealing his employer’s N230,700.

Oleka of No 9 Dantata road, Old Karmo, Abuja, was earlier arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal breach of trust, giving false information and theft by servant.

The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, sentenced Oleka after he pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court for mercy.

Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option of N6,000 fine and also ordered him to pay N203,000 as compensation to
the complainant.

The judge warned the convict to be of good behaviour and to desist from committing crimes after serving his punishment.

The prosecuting counsel, Mrs Mrs Ukagha Ijeoma, had earlier informed the court that the matter was reported by Nnaemeka David of of Shop C24, Maigeri Plaza, Life Camp in Abuja, at Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on July 23.

Ijeoma told the court the Oleka was employed as a manager in David’s Bet Naija business centre and was attached to Wuse II branch.

She said that on July 23, the convict called the complainant on phone and informed him that the shop was bulged by unknown persons and N230,700 stolen.

She told the court that during investigation, it was discovered that the shop was not bulged as alleged by Oleka.

She said that the convict dishonestly stole N230,700 from the company he was employed to manage and gave false information to cover his actions.

Ijeoma added that during police investigation, the convict admitted committing the offence and N97,000 was recovered from him.

The prosecutor said that Oleka claimed that he used part of the money for online betting, contrary to  sections 312, 289 and 140 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
