Court remands activist, Zainab Duke Abiola, over assault on female police orderly

A human rights activist and legal practitioner, Prof. Zainab Duke Abiola, has been remanded in prison custody by a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The court remanded Abiola and her domestic staff on Friday after they were arraigned by the police for assaulting female police orderly, Inspector Teju Moses.

The police had said in a statement that Abiola assaulted Insp. Moses in the presence of her housemaid, Rebecca Enechido, and a male suspect currently at large.

According to the police, the orderly was subjected to “grievous assault” for refusing to breach professional ethics by carrying out menial and domestic chores at her house.

When arraigned on Friday, the first accused (Abiola) was denied bail by the court, which ordered her remand at the Suleja Correctional Facility.

The matter was adjourned until October 5, 2023.
