Court Remands Housewife In Police Custody For Beating Up Policeman

A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, on Thursday ordered the remand of a housewife, Mercy Abuah, for allegedly assaulting a police man.

The defendant, who resides Opposite Burial Ground, Aso Pada, Mararaba, was docked on a four-count charge bordering on intentional insult, resisting arrest, intimidation and assault.

The presiding officer, Mr Albert Maga, ordered that the defendant be remanded in police custody till March 30, to enable the prosecutor bring his witness.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Adaji, had told the court that Insp. Fabiyi Segun, attached to Aso Police Station, arrested the defendant.

Adaji said on March 13, at about 4.30 p.m. the complainant was standing in front of Aso Police Station when the defendant who was passing by spat on him.

When the complainant asked why she did that, the defendant insulted him and told him that he should order for her arrest.

While talking to her, she then held him by the neck of his shirt and tried to strangle him,” he said.

The prosecutor added that when he ordered for the defendant’s arrest, she resisted arrest and tore one of the officer’s uniform.

Adaji said the offences contravened Sections 399, 171, 265 and 397 of the Penal Code.

The defendant pleaded not guilty. (NAN)
