Anambra Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke, says that COVID-19 is avoidable if Nigerians comply with the preventive measures by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The deputy governor said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Awka.

Okeke said that Anambra residents should guard themselves against coronavirus as the second wave was ravaging the world including Nigeria.

“We can avoid the disaster; it is an avoidable death if we comply with the COVID-19 precautionary measures handed down to the public by medical experts,” he said.

Okeke said that it was worrisome that in spite of the number of deaths recorded daily across the globe, some people still doubt the existence of the virus.

He said that coronavirus was not a white man disease alone but it cut across all races and had nothing to do with weather level as it had affected Nigerians as well as other countries.

“The world has lost many souls to the killer disease irrespective of color or status; we have recorded few numbers of deaths as well, we can control the spread,” he said

He urged the people of the state to take all necessary precautions against the virus to be safe and to contain the widespread of the virus into the state.

“The government has done its best through provision of free test centres and medical facilities across the state and in plans to control the spread.

“Gov. Obiano’s administration will continue to do the needful to control the spread of the virus in the state but we need the support of the people to keep away the virus from the state.

“Wearing of face masks, regular hand washing, and social distancing, cough into your elbow, amongst others are major safety protocols for people to strictly observe.

“ We do not want to see anybody die of COVID-19 in Anambra, we have  a team of professionals who had put in lots of time to enlighten the public on what to do , please comply,” he appealed.
