Mr Joseph Emelue, the Controller, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Enugu Command, has commended the state government for extending the fumigation of public places to the custodial centre.
Addressing journalists on the sideline of fumigation of the command’s administrative block in Enugu, Emelue said that the inmates had been educated on necessary measures to prevent the outbreak of the virus in its facilities.
The controller said that the blocks that accommodate inmates were, however, not included in the areas mapped out for decontamination.

He said that inmates had, however, been properly guided on the best way to limit the extreme effect of congestion in the facilities.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had recommended 1.5m social distancing, regular hand wash with soap or use of sanitisers and fumigation of public places as some of the ways to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID -19) pandemic.
On the FG’s directive for state governments to take steps to decongest correctional facilities in their domain, Emelue said that he was awaiting the action of the state government to that effect.
He said that though the command had not received palliatives for the inmates, the prevailing situation in the state or country had no negative impact on the welfare of the inmates.
“The Federal Government has already planned for their welfare, however, we are still talking with the state government for possible support and assistance,” the NCoS controller said.
Emelue commended the state government for its efforts aimed at improving the condition of the inmates.
