A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Segun Odebunmi, has called for urgent and concerted efforts from the Federal and Oyo State Governments to halt the spread of the COVID-19 in the state.

His call was contained in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Odebunmi is the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Information and National Orientation.

Odebunmi (APC-Surulere/Ogo-Oluwa Federal Constituency), who was reacting to the recent increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 in neighbouring Osun, said both the federal and state governments must act fast to prevent the spread of the virus from Ejigbo to neighbouring Surulere and Ogo Oluwa local councils of Oyo State.

The lawmaker urged the Federal Government Task Force Team on COVID-19 and the state government to deploy more medical personnel to the boundary communities to prevent further spread of the virus into the state.

“The state task force team led by Prof. Temitope Alonge should as a matter of urgency swing into action by putting in place necessary facilities and strategy to prevent the spread of the virus from Osun to Oyo through Ejigbo and its environs.

“Over 20 communities in Surulere and Ogo Oluwa local government areas of Oyo state are boundary to Ejigbo where the Abidjan returnees are quarantined by Osun government.

“Nine (9) index cases have been recorded while results of about 103 suspected cases are being awaited. The government should declare total lockdown of the area if not the entire Oyo State where the case is on the increase,” he said.

Odebunmi commended Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and his Osun counterpart, Gov. Gboyega Oyetola, for their efforts at combating the dreaded virus.

He called on stakeholders to support the government efforts by sensitising and giving out relief materials to the needy at this period.

“At my own level as a federal lawmaker, I have embarked on continuous sensitisation and distribution of hand sanitisers as well as other palliatives to my constituents,” he said.
