Daily Trust journalist released third day after military detention

The military had on Tuesday released the Maiduguri Bureau Chief of Daily Trust, Uthman Abubakar who was arrested and detained by the military authorities because of a controversial publication.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust, Mannir Dan-Ali, on Tuesday shortly after speaking to the said editor, who had been in detention since Sunday.

He explained that Abubakar was brought back to the Maiduguri office of the newspaper by an unnamed major who handed him over to a security officer at the office.

According to Dan-Ali’s statement, Abubakar was courteously treated, but  his mobile phones and laptop were still with the military. “They told him that they need time to finish the forensic checks they are carrying out on the equipment,” the statement added.

The development came at the peak of a global call for the military to absolve themselves of suppressing press freedom by releasing the detained editor.
