David Did Not Kill Goliath, The Bible Is Not Infallible! by Femi Aribisala

One of the myths of Christianity is the infallibility of the bible.
Quoting Paul, some Christians insist every word in the bible is “God-breathed.” (2 Timothy 3:16).

When you identify contradictions in the bible, they either refuse to acknowledge them or try to rationalise them away with highfalutin apologetics.
However, these apologetics have not made the contradictions disappear. All they do is establish that these bible-fanatics are not committed to the truth.

Christians generally believe little David killed mighty Goliath, according to the “infallible” account of 1 Samuel 17:50-51. This feat is drummed into us from childhood.
However, the same “infallible” bible also credits the killing of Goliath to Elhanan, one of David’s mighty men.
2 Samuel says:

There was another battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jair from Bethlehem killed Goliath from Gath.” (2 Samuel 21:19

This record of Elhanan (as opposed to David) killing Goliath can be found in many bible translations but other bible translations of the same 2 Samuel 21:19 say Elhanan killed “the brother of Goliath.” These translations include the King James Version (KJV); New King James Version (NKJV); The Living Bible (TLB); and New Living Translation (NLT).

Of the latter, the New King James Version is remarkably unreliable.
As a matter of policy, King James sometimes adds its own words to bible verses, effectively doctoring their meaning.
Although the translation says Elhanan slew “the brother of Goliath;” the words “the brother of” are written in italics, indicating that they do not appear in the original Hebrew text but were added at the discretion of NKJV translators.

However, my purpose here is not just to demonstrate the fallibility of the bible. Bible-worshipping Christians will always reject that fact no matter what.
My purpose is to determine if David killed Goliath.

The question then arises as to which version are we going to believe? Should we believe the classical position that David killed Goliath, or should we believe the equally biblical position that Elhanan killed Goliath?

For a number of reasons, the account stating that David killed Goliath is the less believable.
It is in the tradition of kings and rulers to take credit for other people’s achievements under their kingdom. David was no exception to this.

  • Saul and David

The account of David killing Goliath is so full of contradictions that it is clear it is the fabricated version.
One of the problems with the account has to do with the inability of bible-writers to determine precisely when David first met Saul.

We are told that when Saul transgressed against the Lord, God sent an evil spirit to trouble him. (1 Samuel 16:14). Someone then recommended to Saul that he should hire David to play the harp, offering the dubious thesis that soothing music is a demon-repellent.

But then the man recommending David said something strange: he extolled David, a young teenager who was not even old enough to be in the army, as a man of war:

I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war.” (1 Samuel 16:18

This description is a giveaway. It is obviously written after the fact. There is no basis for describing David, a youth keeping sheep, as “a mighty man of valour” and “a man of war.”

By all accounts, David was not even a man yet. On this recommendation, Saul sent word to Jesse, David’s father, that his son should be seconded to him.
However, David entered Saul’s service not as a harp-playing musician, but as his armour-bearer, even though we are told later that Saul’s armour was too heavy for David. (1 Samuel 17:38-39).

Nevertheless, whenever Saul came under attack by the evil spirit, David would play a harp and the evil spirit would depart. Saul quickly took a liking to David, and he sent to his father a second time that David’s secondment to him should become permanent. (1 Samuel 16:22).

However, when we get to the incident where David is alleged to have killed Goliath, we discover to our surprise that this same David, who was supposed to be Saul’s armour-bearer/musician, had never met Saul before.

In that contradictory account, David was just a young boy tending sheep. His father sent him to deliver lunch to his two brothers at the war-front.
On arriving there, he found Goliath terrorizing everybody and offered to fight against him.
He was then brought to Saul who, on meeting him for the very first time, said to him:

“You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” (1 Samuel 17:33).

However, in the earlier version, David was specifically introduced to Saul as “a man of war.”

Contrary to the earlier account where Saul sent emissaries to David’s father twice, he now did not know who David’s father was.

Conclusion – The bible is a book written and compiled by men; and men are not infallible.

  • What does the original ( not the NKJV ) say in 2 Sam 21:19, my brother? I went through that passage in the KJV but I did not find a word written in italics not to talk of a phrase refering to the brother of Goliath in italics.
It’s either that you are mistaking the NKJV to have come into existence and ciculation before the original KJV or that you, like other dubious Holy Bible translators have something else in your sleeve to discredit the Holy Bible to suit your purpose.
Secondly, no sane person or student of the Holy Bible will tell you that Apostle Paul’s writings are Christ’s words. But, like other inspired Holy Bible writers, Apostle Paul was inspired to write all he wrote by the Holy Spirit of God having come in personal contact with the LORD on his way to Damascus.
Lastly, the Holy Bible was wrtten by men like you and me but carefully chosen and inspired by the Holy Spirit of God for that purpose and for the purpose of bringing the Words of God to lost humanity so as to save humanity from eternal damnation. Having stated this, I’ll like to remind you of the fact that the prince of this world, Satan, has agents recruited for the sole aim of discrediting the Words of God
Their versions of the Holy Bible looks very similar and almost the same thing with the original text. For the reason aduced in the paragraph above, so many versions of the Holy Bible are on sale in the open market, today. Some of these versions claim to simplify or translate the language in the original KJV which, to many, is very difficult to understand.
This is the point Satan and his agents have capitalised on over the years to distort the Holy Bible and give different meanings as well as information from what is contained in the original text.
To claim, therefore, that the infallibility of man was brought to bare in a God inspired writing is to question the originality and genuineness of the God who inspired the write-up in the first place. And, unless one wants to state clearly that he or she is in the camp of the devil, thereby attacking God’s Words, we should be “as wise as the srepent and as innocent as the dove” to look for the real Holy Bible to guide us to the feet of Christ with fear and trembling.
    God bless us all, amen.

  • Femi Aribisala, a plus for that. Keep it up. You have an objective which men before and after you will find out difficult to achieve. Take time to read the bible more and give us your side of it.When through with bible carry quoran and provide ur side too.Let us see if you can reach same conclusion. Then we can make our conclusion. After all some of the events in bible are in quoran. Is quoran or bible that was first written? God understand.

  • Thankyou guys, you have spoken well. Femi sounded like an illiterate in the first paragraph cos many things wouldn’t make sense in everyday living until one who is schooled in it rationalises it with facts(what you don’t know you don’t know). To say that God inspired the bible is that the HolySpirit supernaturally motivated and superintended the prophetic and apoostolic recipients of revelation in the entire process of writing their scriptural books. What the authors or their close associates originally wrote in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek was inspired. Although their original manuscripts have not been discovered, we know what they wrote. In numerous available copies, quotations and translations, there is amazing agreement. Through some 20 centuries of laborious copying and printing, there have being no substantial variations of any important fact or doctrine. So one is tempted to question the significance of your example or what you meant by ‘infallible’. However none of you critics are yet to produce the alleged original and different copy or show from history how it was done away with. To respond specifically now to your ‘score’, having established the fact that these scriptures have been handed down via translations and copyings, some scholars suggest that pre-christian era copyist introduced an error into 2Sam21:19 that created the mistaken impression that Elhanan killed Goliath; the correct reading of the original, in this case would be preserved in 1Ch20:5. Another approach suggests that the contradiction is only apparent. Thus Ancient rabbis suggested that Elhanan is another name for David(which in Hb means ‘beloved one’ and could be a nickname). “Goliath” could be a title and not a name, so there may have been two fighters from Gath named Goliath. About your second, the text does not indicate that saul did not know David b4 d Goliath issue however for your learning, the incident took place between David’s annointing 1Sam16:13 and his becoming a court musician 1sam16:17-23. Expanding a point after limited info is a Hebrew litrary device attested elsewhere in e.g Gen1:24-31; 2:4-25; 10:31; 11:1-9 Conclusion is: the bible is the infallible word of God written by inspired men and built around the coming of the Messiah Jesus. That should be your ‘attack’ lest you keep displaying cheap ignorance on the internet.

    • In fact, the Bible isn’t totally written sequentially, but it is infallible. As I was reading aribisala’s write up that’s what the Holy Spirit ministered to me. Some events happened are not written sequentially, that is why aribisala is confused about it. The Bible doesn’t contradict itself.

  • You guys don’t even bother about original version.David’s battle with Goliath from Gath was at the valley of elah. While Elhanan’s battle against Goliath the gitite was fought at Gob.this are two different location and at well different times, speaking of two different people.Femi should do his study well.Tnx.
