Dele Momodu Predicts Jonathan, Obi Will Struggle Against Tinubu in 2027
Veteran journalist and opposition coalition member, Dele Momodu, has suggested that former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-presidential candidate Peter Obi are unlikely to pose a significant challenge to President Bola Tinubu if they contest the 2027 elections.
Momodu made the remarks on X, stating that Tinubu has effectively “locked down” Southern Nigeria, leaving the opposition with little chance of winning in the region. According to him, the opposition’s only viable strategy is to consolidate support in the North.
“I still choose to be a chronic optimist even at this stage. Several scenarios may still play out. The opposition has only one option left in order to be competitive,” Momodu wrote.
“Since Tinubu has already locked down the South of Nigeria, seemingly, the opposition must work speedily to lock down the North. With common sense, this is feasible, even if difficult.”
The journalist further argued that neither Jonathan nor Obi, both from Southern Nigeria, would be able to mount a strong challenge against the incumbent president.
“I do not see any Southern candidate giving Tinubu any tough challenge. Not former President Jonathan. Not former Governor Peter Obi. If they run, looking more like independent candidates, they will fail spectacularly,” he added.
Momodu’s comments highlight the perceived regional political dynamics shaping the 2027 elections and the strategic considerations the opposition must address to remain competitive.
