The senator representing Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly, Sen. Dino Melaye, has reacted to the attempt on the life of Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, and members of his family on Tuesday morning.

According to a statement by Ekweremadu’s media aide, Uche Anichukwu, some assailants discreetly evaded the security detail stationed at the gate of the senator’s Apo, Abuja residence and accessed the building.

He disclosed that the assailants were afraid of shooting in order not to attract the attention of the security men stationed at the gate.

However, Anichukwu said the assailants were able to grab the senator’s son and directed him to take them to the senator’s bedroom.

The statement further read, “It was at the senator’s bedroom that a struggle ensued, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants with dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape.

“The arrested member of the gang has, however, refused to divulge any information on the operation and has been handed over to the police.

“Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house at the time of the attack. It could be recalled that the lawmaker narrowly escaped an attempt on his life in Abuja on November 17, 2015.

“Although the 2015 incident was reported to the security agencies, nothing has been heard about the matter till date.”

Reacting via Twitter, Melaye, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senator like Ekweremadu, said, “Just spoke to Senator Ike Ekweremadu. There was an attempt to assasinate him about 4am this morning. One of the assains was arrested after serious wrestling. He has been handed over to the police in Apo Police Station. We are in Perilious times but God will continue to be God.”
