Don Jazzy Reveals He Almost Quit Music After Mo’Hits Collapse
Veteran Nigerian producer and music executive, Don Jazzy, has revealed that he nearly abandoned music and relocated abroad following the sudden collapse of Mo’Hits Records in 2012.
Speaking in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy disclosed that the fallout between him and D’banj, which led to the breakup of Mo’Hits, left him devastated and uncertain about his career path.
He said his friends convinced him to stay in Nigeria and rebuild, which inspired the birth of Mavin Records—a label that would go on to define modern Afrobeats.
“When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” Don Jazzy said.
After Mo’Hits’ disbandment, Don Jazzy founded Mavin Records in 2012, bringing along former labelmates such as Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince, while introducing a new generation of stars including Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’ja.
Today, Mavin Records boasts a roster of global Afrobeats talents such as Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
In 2024, Mavin Global reached another milestone after Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired a majority stake in the label, marking one of the biggest international investments in Nigerian music history.
