DPO who beat female officer demoted

A couple of days ago news broke of a shocking incident in Ogun state where a DPO beat a female traffic warden for stopping his private vehicle .

Anifat Bello was beaten black and blue by DPO Patrick Onwu. He was the DPO in charge of Ikenne Police Division, Ogun State.

According to the Vanguard, Mr. Onwu, who was wearing street clothes when he allegedly committed the traffic offence, drove into a nearby filling station to change into his police uniform before returning to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, junction on IBB Boulevard way, where the traffic warden was discharging her official duty, and pounced on her.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has in reaction to this ordered the demotion in rank of Mr. Onwu.

He also ordered his immediate transfer and ordered the Commissioner of Police to set up an investigative panel on the matter.

The IGP directed the state commissioner to forward the necessary details of the accused officer to the force secre­tary, Abuja for further disciplinary actions. Onwu, has now been demoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP) from Superintendent of Police(SP).

It is reckoned that further action will be taken against him.
