Driver kills two people while trying to escape Customs

Unexpected tragedy occurred on Tuesday when a bus driver who was trying to escape Customs around Ewekoro local government area Ogun, ran into two people who have been confirmed dead.

The driver, who allegedly, was smuggling cartons of turkey, swerved and somersaulted while attempting to escape from Custom officers, rammed into two people, including the vulcaniser that was on the roadside, Vanguard reports.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Abimbola Oyeyemi has confirmed the incident.

He said,

“it’s true the Customs men were chasing the bus and it summersault and killed two people “.

Customs PRO in the state, Abdullahi Maiwadah has promised to get back to Vanguard correspondent as soon as he acquires adequate details on the accident.

He said,

“Reference to your information, we have commenced an investigation, I will get across to you as soon as I get the details”.

According to PUNCH correspondent, Towulade of Akinale, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye placed the blame of the tragic accident on the driver and the Customs men.

Oba Ogunleye described one of the victims (mechanic) as a very hard working man, known in the area.
He said,

“Today’s accident is unfortunate and regrettable.

“It is indiscipline on the side of the driver and equally part of indiscipline on the side of the government agency because the Customs ought to have nipped it (smuggling) in the bud right from the border. They should not be pursuing people on the main road.

“They (Customs operatives) were running after these people but after the accident, they have run away. They didn’t wait.”
